A famous type of fossil jewelry is dinosaur bone jewellery which is called agitated bone jewellery.

By using calcite replacements, the bone of this jewellery has already been fossilized. Its minerals are then replaced with agate, a mineral made from silicon dioxide after millions of years. Jasper may sometimes replace this mineral.

Ammonites are perhaps the most well-known fossil, with the typical ribbed spiral-form shell shown above. These sea creatures existed between 240 and 65 million years ago when they went extinct alongside the dinosaurs.

The term 'ammonite' (usually in lowercase) comes from the Greek Ram-horned god Ammon. Ammonites are cephalopod predators, which include their living relatives the octopus, squid, cuttlefish, and nautilus.

Ammonite fossil jewelry is made of fossilized ammonite shells, which are made primarily of aragonite, the same mineral found in nacre, with a microstructure inherited from the shell. It is one of only a few biogenic gemstones, along with amber and pearl. Ammonite is a rare gemstone that is only commercially mined in Southern Alberta. With ammonite’s supply rapidly dwindling, its value has risen over time. Many people are now thinking about purchasing gemstones as an investment.
