We are reluctantly selling our beloved camper “Delilah” to help finance a house move
“Delilah” was bought by us last year as a Devon conversion with a hard top, the interior was a bit shoddy and it had a worn engine.
Last summer we removed the hard top and fitted an original Devon pop top, which was salvaged from a scrapped camper. Before fitting we stripped the pop top down and fitted all new seals, rivets and head lining as well as a new vent hatch. A wooden framework was constructed to take the components of the pop top, and the whole thing was spray painted white.
The interior was stripped out and the flooring removed. All the internal surfaces of the camper were cleaned, rust proofed and painted. The floor was in very good condition for its age, as is the rest of the chassis. The excellent condition of the chassis was commented on by two separate garages and It flew through its last MOT apart from a front brake problem that is now fixed.
New cupboard units were constructed to fit around a newly purchased refrigerator. They also house the original gas cooker/grill and the original sink unit.
The original water tank was fitted with a 12v pump operated by a foot switch and pumped to the sink through a tap which folds down after use to enable the lid to close.
The structure of the rock and roll bed was stripped and painted and then rebuilt with new fixings and hinges. The original cushions were recovered in cream and red vinyl of a commercial grade.
A new “buddy seat” was constructed and the cushions also recovered.
A table was also made out of the same material as the work top of the unit and this fits onto the unit with hinges and a screw in leg.
The flooring was replaced with a commercial grade heavy duty red vinyl from Amtico, and is fitted under the front seats as well as the cab. This vinyl is very good quality and was very expensive .
In the spring of this year we rebuilt the 1600cc engine, as it was showing signs of its age.
The work included new main bearings, new big and small end bearings, new pistons and cylinders, new distributor and reconditioned cylinder heads. The engine has been run in over the summer and has done just over 600 miles since its overhaul .
