Geography: Skiathos is part of the Northern Sporades located in the north-western Aegean Sea. Sporades complex is composed of Skopelos, Skiathos Alonissos and Skyros islands. Nine smaller uninhabited islets surround the island from which, bigger and worth visiting are megali (big) Tsougria, and Arkos. Although it is the most famous of this group it is actually the smallest covering an area of just 47 square kilometres, ( 6.5 miles long from east to west and 3.5 miles wide), 44 kilometres of coastline and a population of around 6.200.
Despite its small area, part of Skiathos' fame comes from the fact that it has over sixty beaches to visit. Stretching along the south coast is a selection of easily accessed sandy beaches sheltered from the strong northerly winds. To the north the beautiful coasts of the island are even more astonishing, mostly uninhabited, keeping this entire natural environment, intact and unspoiled. It is irregular in shape and mountainous though the highest point called Karafilzhanaka doesn’t exceed the altitude of 433 meters. Most of the mountains are covered with pine, plane trees, and olive trees housing various plant species.
The island belongs to the province of Magnesia and forms the municipality of Skiathos. The capital and the main harbour of the island is Skiathos town.
The climate: Skiathos has a Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and temperate summers. The winter months of December, January and February have rainfalls, and some years there is even snow. The hottest month of the year are usually July and August enjoys frequent cooling 'Meltemia'-Northerly winds which start to blow in the evenings, and calm down after lunchtime the following day.
