(B/L/D) Day 8: Quang Ngai - Hoi An (46 km) Cycling to Mai Lai. This is the site of one of the worst massacres of the American/Vietnam War, and we will take a guided tour of the site and museum. After that historical journey we continue cycling into Vietnamese countryside and visit some typical pagodas. We loop back through quiet, rural roads to the main highway and are transferred to Hoi An. The afternoon is free to explore the unique heritage site of the old town of Hoi An. Accommodation in a 4* Hotel (B/L/D) Day 9: Hoi An (54 km) Visit Mai Son, the ancient centre of Cham civilization. Our bus transfers us out of town to avoid the highway before cycling along country back roads along the Song Tranh River to Mai Son. We have lunch before spending the afternoon visiting the site. We are transferred back to Hoi An in the afternoon where we can have dinner at a place of our choice. Accommodation in a 4* Hotel (or below) (B/L/-) Day 10: Hoi An - Hue (100 km) We are transferred beyond Danang to take on the High Van Pass and climb 500 metres over 10 km. After lunch, we turn off the main highway and take a coastal side road for 44 km almost all the way to our destination. Energetic riders will make it all the way into Hue. Accommodation in a 4* Hotel (B/L/D) Day 11: Hue - Nam Dinh We explore Hue and visit the citadel. Take a boat ride along the Perfume River and visit the tombs of the Nguyen emperors. Our bus takes us to the train station and we catch the Reunification Express to Nam Dinh. Accommodation in a basic local hotel. (B/-/D) Day 12: Nam Dinh - Cuc Phuong (60 km) After arrival in Nam Dinh, we head to Ninh Binh and ride to the ancient city of Hua Lu where we visit ancient temples. Continuing to the National Park at Cuc Phuong we visit the primate rescue centre before checking into our accommodation at the park. Accommodation in a basic local hotel. (B/L/D) Day 13: Cuc Phuong - Hai Phong (60 km) Riding on some back roads through North Vietnam, we head east, passing through rice fields and following country back roads past poor but friendly villages. The bus transfers us the rest of the way to Hai Phong late in the afternoon. Accommodation in a basic local hotel. (B/L/D) Day 14: Hai Phong - Cat Ba Island (35km) We cycle to the harbour and take a private boat to Fulong on Cat Ba Island. From Fulong we cycle 35 kilometres taking the islands' only road and stop on the way for lunch at the national park headquarters. Accommodation in a basic local hotel. (B/L/D) Day 15: Fulong - Halong City/Hanoi* or Halong City Today we cruise on a boat through Halong Bay. On January tours: transfer would be from Halong to Hanoi by road. *On March and August tours we can spend the whole day on Halong Bay and stay the night in Halong City. With a view to develop a tourist attraction, provincial began to develop the Binh Chau Hot Mineral Springs in 1988, and their efforts were recognised in 2003, when the World Travel Organisation named Binh Chau as one of its 65 sustainable eco-tourism developments in 47 countries and territories around the world. Walk on the wooden corridors through the flowing springs of the Sai Gon-Binh Chau Resort, and you can feel the stimulating atmosphere of fresh air laced with steam and the fragrance of the forest underneath the leafy canopy. The view is miraculous in the morning, as the steam covers the natural scenery in a thin dew. Most tourists in Vietnam travel who come to Binh Chau enjoy the fun of boiling eggs in the natural 80-degree springs in just ten minutes. Guests can buy eggs and lower them into small hot pools built by the developer for the purpose. According to researchers who tested the springs in 1975, the hot mineral spring source contains silica, sulphur, sodium and chlorine, all of which have healing properties and can aid rheumatism and circulation. Sarah Elaine from the UK decided a little pampering was in order after a busy year, and she decided to visit the hot springs. She intended a day trip, but when she came, she realised that there wasn't enough time to enjoy all wonderful things at the site."I was glad to get into the hot spring to sort myself out and at least look as wet as everyone else," she said. "The resort was quite because of the rainy season. The hot springs were wonderful and I spent the rest of the day soaking, having a massage and eating some very good tamarind fish broth." Legend describes the thermal springs as a hot water pot that the Vietnamese "Goddess of Boiling Water" spilled into the place in anger after her husband went hunting and was a long time returning. She got angry and threw the boiling water pot away, and it became the marvellous stream of hot water still running now. Tour of Delhi : Red Fort (out side visit) - The red sand stone walls of Lal Quila, the Red Fort extend for 2 km and vary in height from 18m on the river side to 33m on the city side. Shah Jahan started construction of the massive fort in 1638 and it was completed in 1648. The Red Fort dates from the peak of Mughal power. The Mughal reign from Delhi was a short one. Aurangzeb was the first and the last emperor to rule from here. Jama Masjid- the Great Mosque of Old Delhi was both the largest and the final architectural extravagance of Shah Jahan. Begun in 1644, the mosque was not completed until 1658. It has three gateways, four angle towers and two minarets standing 40m (133ft) high constructed of alternating vertical strips of red sandstone and white marble. The courtyard of the mosque can hold 25,000 people. Take a rickshaw ride to Chandni Chowk - the main street of Old Delhi - the colourful shopping bazaar just opposite the Red Fort and visit Raj Ghat - the cremation site of Mahatma Gandhi after his assassination in 1948. Sightseeing tour of New Delhi visiting Qutab Minar - 234 feet high tower. The Qutab Minar itself is a soaring tower of victory that was started in 1193, immediately after the defeat of the last Hindu kingdom in Delhi. It is nearly 73m(243ft) high and tapers from a 15m(50ft) diameter base to just 2.5m(9ft) at the top. The tower has five distinct storeys, each marked by a projecting balcony. The first three storeys are made of red sandstone, the fourth and the fifth of marble & sandstone. Also visit the Tomb of Mughal Emperor Humayun. Built in the mid-16th century by Haji Begum, the Persian-born senior wife of Humayun, the second Mughal emperor, this is a wonderful early example of Mughal architecture. The elements in its design - a squat building, high arched entrances that let in light, topped by a bulbous dome and surrounded by formal gardens - were to be refined over the years to the magnificence of the Taj Mahal in Agra. Drive past India Gate (War Memorial), President's House, which was once the Viceroy's Palace, Parliament House and Secretariat buildings. Day 03 - Arrive Varanasi Meeting on arrival Varanasi Railway Station and transfer to the hotel. Afternoon time permitting excursion to Sarnath - after attaining enlightenment, Lord Buddha came and delivered his first sermon, or in religious language, set in motion the Wheel of Law, Maha Dharmachakra Pravartan. The virtuous emperor Ashoka who later in his life became a strong follower of Buddhism, spreading the message of love and compassion everywhere, visited Sarnath around 234 BC, and erected a Stupa here. After this, several Buddhist structures were raised from the period 3rd century BC to 11th century AD. Sarnath today stands witness to some of the great Buddhist monuments, an important landmark in the history of Buddhist religion. Evening visit Holy River Ganges Ganga Aarti at Dasaswamedh ghat, close to Kashi Vishwanath Temple, is one of the prime attractions of Varanasi. It starts just after sunset, with a bunch of young men choreographing to the chantings, holding the lamps. People start arriving at the ghats as early as 5pm. Dasaswamedh ghat becomes a hub of activity, with people sitting and waiting for the aarti, buying flowers and other things from nearby shops or performing pooja. I sat listening to an attractive old man who narrated Ramayana to a bunch of tourists who were listening keenly. Several babas sat near the ghats, looking for donations Varanasi or Kashi as it was called in the 7th century B.C has been the religious capital of the Hindu faith since recorded time and is one of the oldest cities in the world and a hub of firmly rooted traditions. The old city of Varanasi is a maze of small streets and alleyways, hiding in disorderly array no less than 2000 temples and shrines. Domes, minarets, pinnacles and towers, and derelict 18th century palaces dominate the sacred left bank of the river Ganges. Overnight at the hotel. Day 04 -Varanasi to Khajuraho - Fly Early morning boat ride on the river Ganges, where you can see hundreds of devotees offering prayers to the Sun God, and rinsing them selves of all their sins in this holy river. Old Delhi - where you will visit Red Fort - The red sand stone walls of Lal Quila, the Red Fort extend for 2 km and vary in height from 18m on the river side to 33m on the city side. Shah Jahan started construction of the massive fort in 1638 and it was completed in 1648. The Red Fort dates from the peak of Mughal power. The Mughal reign from Delhi was a short one. Aurangzeb was the first and the last emperor to rule from here. Jama Masjid- the Great Mosque of Old Delhi was both the largest and the final architectural extravagance of Shah Jahan. It has three gateways, four angle towers and two minarets standing 40m (133ft) high constructed of alternating vertical strips of red sandstone and white marble. The courtyard of the mosque can hold 25,000 people. Day 04 - Agra / Jaipur - Drive - 5 Morning after breakfast at the hotel proceed to Jaipur by car to reach in around 5 hours time enroute visiting Fatehpur Sikri 40 kms (25 miles) before Agra - a cultural and imperial capital conceived and built by Emperor Akbar in 1569 and later abandoned due to scarcity of water. See the graceful buildings within the city including Jama Masjid, Tomb of Salim Chisti and Panch Mahal. Arrive and check in at the hotel. Evening walk through the old part of the city. Overnight at the hotel. Day 05 - At Jaipur. Morning after breakfast at the hotel visit Hawa Mahal - which was constructed in 1799, the Hawa Mahal or the Palace of Winds, is one of Jaipur's major landmarks, although it is actually little more than a façade. This five storey building, which overlooks the main street of the bustling old city, is a stunning example of Rajput artistry with its pink, delicately honeycombed sandstone windows. Later proceed to Amber Fort - the ancient capital of the state until 1728. The fort is a superb example of Rajput architecture, stunningly situated on a hillside and overlooking a lake, which reflects its terraces and ramparts. Visit the Jagmandir of the Hall of Victory glittering with mirrors, Jai Mahal and the Temple of Kali. You ride up to the ramp of this 11th Century Bastion atop a gaily decorated elephant. Built by Shah Jahan, the Taj is a white marble memorial to his beautiful wife Mumtaz Mahal. This monument took 22 years to be completed and was designed, and planned by Persian architect Ustad Isa. Apart from its stunning design balance and perfect symmetry, the Taj is also noted particularly for its elegant domes, intricately carved screens and some of the best inlay work ever seen. AGRA FORT - Built by the famed Mughal emperor Akbar in 1565 AD, the fort is predominantly of red sandstone. Ensconced within is the picture perfect Pearl Mosque, which is a major tourist attraction. It lies on the bend of the river Yamuna, almost in the heart of the town. Akbar built it as his citadel over the years 1563-73 in the finest architectural style. While hunting around Sikri his curiosity was aroused by the songs of some minstrels about the celebrated Khwaja -Mu'inu'd-din Chisti, the founder of the Chisti order of SUFIS. Akbar, who was without a male heir heard about Saint Salim Chisti and visited him in the year 1568. The saint blessed him with 3 sons and in gratitude Akbar ordered the great mosque of Fatehpur Sikri built under his supervision. As a mark of respect to the saint, Akbar shifted his capital to Fatehpur Sikri and built various secular buildings like the Diwan -I-Am, Diwan-I-Khas, Jodhabai palace, Birbal's house, Marian's house and the Panchmahal. Jaipur is the capital of the state of Rajasthan a romantic realm of resplendent palaces, mighty fortresses and regal Maharajahs that lies in the western deserts and is an utterly unique part of India. Proudly belonging to the KSHATRIYA warrior caste and fiercely independent, the Rajput princes made fearsome foes. However, many of them realized that to maintain their wealth and authority locally, it was expedient to proclaim allegiance to the central power. Thus, many enjoyed a privileged position under the Mughal emperors and also the British Raj that followed. The bustling Rajasthan capital of Jaipur takes its name from its venerated founder Jai Singh II, who was given the title Sawai Maharaja by the Mughal. Literally translated this would mean 'one and a quarter', suggesting that the Mughal thought this emperor to be more valuable than just 'one'. Jaipur is known as the 'Pink City' on account of the distinctive colour of its buildings. This did not, however, form part of the original plan, but dates back to 1856, when the city was given a wash of pink in honor of a State Visit from Prince Albert. This evening, visit the Birla Temple to learn more about the fascinating religious life of Jaipur. The marble structure, built as recently as 1985, houses ornate statues including one of Lakshmi (goddess of Wealth and Beauty) and Narayan dressed in gaudy robes, representing a Hindu vision of heavenly luxury.
