In 2002 Saadani was gazetted to become Tanzania's 13th National Park and it is hoped that the upgrade to National Park status will bring improved infrastructure, access and anti-poaching activities, as well as the reintroduction of various Camp, Lodge -Full board                    Day 4:       After breakfast depart for Mikumi National on a drive of 8 hours.  Packed lunch will be provided. The park is also famous for its wild dogs and 6m long pythons.   Day 6:       Day excision to Udzungwa National park for hiking and swimming in the waterfalls. Overnight a Lodge/Camping/, full board   UDZUNGWA NATIONAL PARK is the newest, opened to the public 1992, and one of the most beautiful wilderness areas in Tanzania. Covering an area of 1900 sq km., the uniqueness of this park lies in its biodiversity in hosting a variety of animals and plant species not found anywhere else in the world. The red Colobus and the Sane crested manbrey, elephants, buffalos, leopards, and sable antelopes are some of the residents in this park. A good range of birdlife is present which includes Rufus winged sunbird, Iringa akalat, Lagden's bush shrike and Udzungwa partridge. Activities include a hike to the Sanje water falls .   Day 7        Depart in the morning after breakfast for Selous Game Reserve. This will be along drive of 5 hours through some of the most scenic parts of Southern Tanzania. Villages and the Uluguru Mountains dot along the way.  You will make a short lunch break by the road side arriving at the Camp by late afternoon.  Late afternoon game drive and overnight at Lodge/Camping/, full board   Day 8:       Morning walking safari followed by an afternoon game drive. Nestled in the Western Cape, Olifantsrivier Valley area, about 3 hours drive from Cape Town and its International Airport.  The Cederberg area is the ideal stay over because of its proximity to major routes leading to the neighboring villages of Ceres, Clanwilliam and the coastline hamlets of Lamberts Bay and Saldanha Bay. The Bakkrans Reserve area was used by farmers for about 200 years for grazing during the winter/spring season. During the latter years the veld was divided and fenced into camps. Over-grazing eventually became a big problem because large herds of sheep and goats were left in these camps for much longer periods. At times, cattle were even left for months on Mooiberg plain, which resulted in devastating degradation of those parts. It will still take many years to recover from this. COTTAGES: The 4 twin bedded cottages were built by local craftsmen, in the traditional style of the area. Everything is handmade. Materials (stone, building clay, thatch) come from the Reserve. The poplar frames for the roofs come from Matjiesrivier. However, we used cement for all the floors because clay floors don't last well - and not at all in the bathroom areas. By the way, in the olden days the cottages had no floors - just the pure sand. The doors and windows are handmade from whatever planks were available. The door frames are from Cederwood fence poles that were recovered when we took down the inner camp fences in the Reserve. Incidentally, one of main reasons why the Clanwilliam Ceder is so threatened today, is because its wood was so popular and thus severely harvested, mostly for building materials and furniture. These old pieces of furniture are very prized and scarce today. The Cederwood fence posts are not prone to borer beetles and seldom rot, especially not in the drier Karoo and were therefore used whenever possible. The rows of stones between the cottages are to cover the drain pipes, which lead to proper underground drains, which were built strictly according to Nature Conservation regulations. The corrugated zinc we used for roof caps and in the bathrooms, is typical re-used zinc as you would usually find out here. The 4 cottages were placed on as small a footprint as possible, but still with enough room for maximum privacy. Each cottage is in front of a klipkoppie (rocky outcrop) and faces east. In earlier years all buildings (also farm houses - remember they were mostly built with clay bricks) faced east, presenting the narrowest part of the house to the cold northerly winds and to protect it from the winter rains. At Bakkrans this also means that all cottages have a view into the Great Karoo, with the Roggeveld mountains approximately 150 kilometres away. The bathrooms were designed and placed in such a way that you can have grand view and experience a sense of freedom, while having a shower. FURNITURE:The furniture in the cottages is typical of what you would have found in such settings - especially because the women of the households would also stay here in the olden days.It was quite a struggle for us to find the right furniture for these cottages because most furniture is nowadays "restored". In some cases the pieces of furniture in the cottages at Bakkrans are even more scarce and valuable than restored or new furniture. The beds are typical of the metal "katels" of earlier years. However, beds in the old times were often flat on the ground, just with an underlay of reeds. COTTAGES: The 4 twin bedded cottages were built by local craftsmen, in the traditional style of the area. Everything is handmade. Materials (stone, building clay, thatch) come from the Reserve. The poplar frames for the roofs come from Matjiesrivier. However, we used cement for all the floors because clay floors don't last well - and not at all in the bathroom areas. By the way, in the olden days the cottages had no floors - just the pure sand. The doors and windows are handmade from whatever planks were available. The door frames are from Cederwood fence poles that were recovered when we took down the inner camp fences in the Reserve. Incidentally, one of main reasons why the Clanwilliam Ceder is so threatened today, is because its wood was so popular and thus severely harvested, mostly for building materials and furniture. These old pieces of furniture are very prized and scarce today. The Cederwood fence posts are not prone to borer beetles and seldom rot, especially not in the drier Karoo and were therefore used whenever possible. The rows of stones between the cottages are to cover the drain pipes, which lead to proper underground drains, which were built strictly according to Nature Conservation regulations. The corrugated zinc we used for roof caps and in the bathrooms, is typical re-used zinc as you would usually find out here. The 4 cottages were placed on as small a footprint as possible, but still with enough room for maximum privacy. Each cottage is in front of a klipkoppie (rocky outcrop) and faces east. In earlier years all buildings (also farm houses - remember they were mostly built with clay bricks) faced east, presenting the narrowest part of the house to the cold northerly winds and to protect it from the winter rains. At Bakkrans this also means that all cottages have a view into the Great Karoo, with the Roggeveld mountains approximately 150 kilometres away. The bathrooms were designed and placed in such a way that you can have grand view and experience a sense of freedom, while having a shower. FURNITURE:The furniture in the cottages is typical of what you would have found in such settings - especially because the women of the households would also stay here in the olden days.It was quite a struggle for us to find the right furniture for these cottages because most furniture is nowadays "restored". In some cases the pieces of furniture in the cottages at Bakkrans are even more scarce and valuable than restored or new furniture. The beds are typical of the metal "katels" of earlier years. However, beds in the old times were often flat on the ground, just with an underlay of reeds. Much has been done to restore the island's ecological haven to what it used to be before the intervention of man. In 1991 Robben Island was included in the SA natural heritage program and the northern part of the island was declared a bird sanctuary. Springbuck, ostrich, rabbits, Jackass penguins and Cape Fur seals are among the wildlife found on the island. In 1997 the Robben Island National Museum was established. The Museum is a dynamic institution and runs educational programs for schools, youths and adults. It facilitates tourism development, conducts ongoing research related to the island and is responsible for the safekeeping of various archives. On December 1st, 1999, Robben Island was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Today the island has a thriving population that lives in a quaint village with a bank, post office, museum and grocery store. On the road to the village visitors pass a square-towered church, old Sailboat cannons and old cars that sputter along the narrow tar roads. Most of the buildings date back to World War II, a historical background supported by the evidence of bunkers and 9.2-inch guns. These armaments were erected during the war to protect Cape Town from her enemies. The island generates its own electricity and the inhabitants get their water from nine boreholes. Practically everything else, from milk to building materials, has to be ferried over from Cape Town Harbour. Ferries sail daily from the V&A Waterfront jetty, taking visitors to the island.
