Description:

Saturday 30th January 2010 - 8pm - 4am

The site, with its commanding views, has been strategically important since Roman times. The castle itself, parts of which date to the 13th century, has witnessed invasion by the Danes and the Normans, was formerly home to the Archdeacon of Canterbury and was once occupied by Thomas à Becket. It also played an important role as an observation post in World War II. With these credentials the castle surely merits its Grade 1 listing as being of Architectural or Historic Interest.

The high vantage point of the castle, which made defence its initial attraction, allows unprecedented views of the south coast and the French coast on a clear day. Stand on the terrace and hear the cry of the herons in the wood below and smell the salty sea air as you gaze on a view that has altered little over the centuries.

Inside the castle you are transported back to mediaeval times. In the Great Hall with its part panelled walls, wooden roof beams and gothic arched windows you can imagine hearing the lively talk, clank of goblets and music of bygone feasts.

The West Room, whilst echoing the majesty of the mediaeval castle, belongs to a different era. It was added in Edwardian times when the famous architect Sir Robert Lorimer was commissioned to restore the castle, which was then near to ruin. As you enter the room your attention is immediately drawn to the view from the huge bow window. Wood panelling and a stone fireplace lend the room an imposing yet welcoming atmosphere.

The castle has an authenticity and ambience that rarely fails to charm. Whether you enjoy the view from the terrace on a summer afternoon or toast by one of the open fires on a chilly evening, Lympne Castle is the perfect place to welcome and impress.

Many ghostly tales are rumoured about the Castle, one of which is the ghostly presence of a Roman solider. It is said that he fell to his death whilst on duty in the watch-tower, however his footsteps are still heard today walking back to his post at the top of the tower.

Feelings of despair and fear are sometimes felt in areas of the Castle. This is said to be from a small group of Saxons that were caught hiding by Norman soldiers. They were promptly slaughtered and their residual energy is still felt today.

Many other apparitions, one in Tudor dress, have been seen around the various rooms and grounds too.
