About me
My name is Eugene Portman and my work not only encompasses Wales but I also cover the entire UK (including Scotland). I work both as a solo jazz pianist and a combo player. 'The Eugene Portman Trio' is well known for producing a type of jazz that is easy to listen to and features Dave Trigwell (from Sussex) on drums and Mike Porter-Ward on bass (from Kent). At the moment I am also working with three outstanding vocalists: Dave Edwards from East Grinstead in Sussex, Alice Harvey from Derby and Sheila Daniels from Cheam in Surrey.
The music I play
My playing has been influenced by the likes of George Shearing, Oscar Peterson, Monty Alexander and Dudley Moore, so my playing tends not to be too high-brow, but sits comfortably in any event, party or wedding. I play all the great jazz standards that you would expect but I usually manage to find different ways of playing them. My repertoire covers the standards of Gerswin, Cole Porter and Antonio Carlos Jobim mixed with a healthy dose of fusion numbers by musicians like George Benson and Joe Sample. My music is in demand for events where music is required to be inobtrusive - however, I can turn up the gas when required.
