Eight years on and just past the halfway mark, it is clear that the world is failing in its commitments to poor people. Discrimination against women and girls is the major barrier to progress. Around the world, their unequal position in societies means women: * are regularly exposed to violence * struggle to see a doctor or nurse * find it more difficult than men to earn a living * often can’t own their own land As a result, women and girls are more likely to be poor, less likely to go to school and increasingly likely to be infected with HIV. Gordon Brown has said that the world is facing a ‘development emergency’. ActionAid agrees. He has issued a ‘call to action’ to governments, business and anti-poverty groups to step up their efforts to get the MDGs back on track. For this to be successful, tackling the discrimination against women must be Gordon’s, and the worlds, top priority. International Women’s Day coming is the perfect moment to send a strong message to Gordon Brown about women’s rights.
